Katerina Maleeva

Born May 7th, 1969 in Sofia.
She was only 15 in 1984 when she won the Bulgarian National Women`s title.
Katerina’s professional career started in 1984 and went on until 1997.
She reached the prestigious top 10 ranking on February 30 1989. On July 6 1990 she scored at number six in the world. Before her were such tennis greats as Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Monica Selesh, Zina Garrison and Gabriella Sabbatini. Katerina won 11 singles titles and was the runner-up at 8 more. She won 2 doubles tournaments and was the runner-up at 7 more with different partners.
She played a total of 34 Grand Slam tournaments reaching 7 quarterfinals (Melbournе 1990 and 1991, Roland Garros 1990, Wimbledon 1990 and 1992, US Open 1988 and 1993). She was the runner-up at the 1994 US Open doubles(with partner Robin White). Katerina qualified 5 times for the Masters tournament at Madison Square Garden, reaching the quarter-final in 1990. This was the year of her most successful performance at the Grand Slam tournaments – she reached 3 quarterfinals and one 8-th final.
Throughout her career, she won 369 of the of 579 matches she played, thus winning the 45-th place in the historic chart.
She participated in 3 Olympic Games and was 10 times member of the Fed Cup team.
As a member of the Bulgarian Fed Cup team together with sister Manuela she placed her country twice at number 3 in the world ( Nagoya 1985, behind USA and Czechoslovakia, and Vancouver 1987 behind West Germany and USA). Together with sister Magdalena she played in 1995 in Sofia the historic tie against Spain . The media called that day “Easter day of Bulgarian tennis”.
Katerina had wins over tennis greats, such as Martina Navratilova, Arancha Sanches-Vicario, Gabriela Sabatini, Mery Jo Fernandez, Conchitta Martinez, Jennifer Capriati, Zina Garrison, Helena Sukova, Yana Novotna.
